Atherosclerosis is the process of narrowing of blood vessels caused by a buildup of plaque. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry O2 and nutrients from heart to parts of body. As we become older, fats calcium and cholesterol can collect in the arteries and form plaque

Common symptoms

  • Chest pain (angina). We will feel pressure, tightness in our chest, which seems like someone is standing on our chest. This pain, referred as angina-usually occurs on the left side of the our chest. Angina is usually triggered by physical or emotional stress.

    The pain usually gets relived after few minutes of stopping the stressful activity.

    In some people, especially in women, this pain can be fleeting and sharp that is felt in the neck, arm or back.

  • Shortness of breath. When our heart is not able to pump enough blood to meet our bodily needs, we may develop shortness of breath or tiredness, fatigue with exertion.
  • Heart attack. Completely blocked coronary artery will cause a heart attack. The major signs of a heart attack is crushing pressure in our chest and pain in our shoulder, arm, and sometimes with shortness of breath and diaphoresis
